Following is a commentary by Dr. Stanley N. Cohen, a molecular geneticist and professor of medicine at the Stanford University School of Medicine. He and his collaborators developed the basic techniques for recombinant DNA research, and in 1973 carried out the first successful gene transplantation experiments.
