We are ball aboard this month’s #ArchivesHashtagParty theme of #ArchivesAthletes with a #portrait of the 1901 Women’s basketball team of the Susquehanna Collegiate Institute in Towanda, Pennsylvania. Seated on the left is Alice C. Evans (1881-1975) with her classmates. Through her landmark research as a dairy bacteriologist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Evans discovered the bacterium in raw milk from infected cows was the source of undulant fever in humans and advocated for the pasteurization of milk.
The National Library of Medicine recently acquired 3 artist books, a new format for NLM historical visual materials collections. The new artist books, Caudex Folium, Fractured: Covid 19 – Memento Mori vs. Memento Vivere, and Hecatombe 9-11 were created by #BookArtist Maria Pisano. In today’s post from Circulating Now, Maria Pisano tells us what an artist book is, how she became a book artist, and how these unique objects function as both book and artistic structure.
Strike up the band! It's #NationalCoastGuardDay. We are commemorating the 231st anniversary of the U.S. Coast Guard with this #photoprint from 1989 of Surgeon General C. Everett Koop in uniform conducting the Coast Guard band. Visit the link in our bio to access the image and full description in NLM Digital Collections.
Following yesterday’s post in honor of #NationalVisionExamMonth, we are featuring an item from NLM’s patent medicine trade card collection dating from the late 19th century. This American-made #tradecard is an #advertisement for celluloid eyeglasses. This lightweight and flexible synthetic plastic was developed in the 19th century and was used as a consumer replacement for more expensive options such as ivory, linen, and rubber.
The #eyes have it! Yes, August is #NationalVisionExamMonth, founded in 1989 by Sears Optical.
What happened to July? For the end of #NationalCulinaryArtsMonth, we are featuring a manuscript #cookbook from our digitized #RecipeBook collection. In September of 1706, Elizabeth Broomhead began ‘A book of choice receipts in preserveing, consearving, and candying, etc: receipts in cookery and physick, and other things’. Starting with candied plums and ending with gravy soup, Broomhead filled the book with recipes, preparations, and remedies. Scroll to find her recipes for "Fresh Cheese”, “Chocalett”, and “Snow Cream”. Visit the link in our bio to explore the collection.
