Filmstrips are old school, but these are custom old school. The strips were beautifully etched and painted by hand, without use of a camera, and distributed in part to help teach the production techniques. The content is valuable, too, offering a glimpse at health concerns and education in a certain time and place, China in 1949-1950. There are 23 filmstrips in this collection, and NLM has nothing else like it.
For #ChallengeWednesday here is Lantern Slide 80, also known as “Nightmare Turtle” from the St. Elizabeths Magic Lantern Slide Collection (1855-1890s). This #SlipSlide shows a sleeping man having a nightmare featuring a blue mare astride a giant turtle brandishing a sword and lobster (image 2). Visit the link in our bio to read more about this #CuriousCollection in Hidden Treasure (page 176-177).

For today's #ArchivesHashtagParty, we’re heading back to the “Old Red Brick” building days of the Army Medical Library, one of the National Library of Medicine’s predecessor institutions. From our Prints and Photographs collection is a still image taken in 1948 of library staff using various kinds of #ArchivesOldSchool technology like mimeograph machines, manual typewriters, and index cards to complete their work.
