Adrian Kantrowitz (born #OTD in 1918) is perhaps best known as the surgeon who performed the first human heart transplant in the United States, three days after South Africa's Christiaan Barnard performed the world's first such operation in December 1967. For most of his career however, Kantrowitz was one of America's most prolific surgeon-inventors, whose innovations included cardiac pacemakers, mechanical left heart devices, and the intra-aortic balloon pump (IABP), which is still used in thousands of cardiac patients each year. His pioneering research consistently explored and elucidated the potentials as well as the limitations of bioelectronic technology.

Happy #SkeletonSaturday! These magnificent hand-colored illustrations are from Christoph Jacob Trew's Tabulae Osteologicae (Nuremberg, 1767). Trew (1695-1769) was an influential German anatomist, physician, and botanist who was best known for his works on botany and anatomy. Under his guidance and instruction, these massive plates were created by the artist Nicolaus Friedrich Eisenberger and engraver Georg Lichtensteger, including color as an educational tool for students.

This film, Combat Exhaustion (1943), was restricted to US Army medical personnel at the time of its production, and only became available for wider screening decades later. The term combat exhaustion, or combat fatigue as it was often called, is today known as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). It was an umbrella term for the range of stress, fear, and grief-driven psychiatric problems that affected US troops fighting in World War II. In this clip, a soldier recalls his attempts to rescue a wounded comrade following a fierce battle of the Italian Campaign.

We're celebrating #WorldHeartDay today by sharing the #TitlePage from De Affectionibus Cordis ("On Affections of the Heart") by Annibale Albertini. Published in Venice in 1618, this book is considered the first publication on #HeartDisease.

Today we are featuring "This Lead is Killing Us: A History of Citizens Fighting Lead Poisoning in Their Communities," one of seven titles available during the open Call for Requests to host NLM Traveling Exhibitions. Lead exposure can cause neurological problems and sometimes even death; yet this metal has been pervasive in many aspects of American life for over a century. Many industries have included lead in their production processes and in products like household paints and gasoline, endangering health. This exhibition tells an important story of advocates protecting their communities from the dangers of lead and making their voices heard with industry, housing authorities, and elected officials.
