The National Library of Medicine's new #OnlineExhibition ‘So, What’s New in the Past?: The Multiple Meanings of Medical History’ explores how the history of medicine has told different stories and different truths over time depending on the questions asked and concerns raised. If you can still find one, fire up the record player and learn about peptic ulcers with this 7-inch 33 1/3 rpm sponsored by the makers of Milpath, a mild tranquilizer popular in the 1950s and ‘60s. After listening to side 1, flip the record and relax to Beethoven’s Country Dances for Orchestra on side 2. It was common in that era for pharma to produce records of this type—a medical topic on one side, a classical composition on the other. The National Library of Medicine has about 200 vinyl records on medical topics in 7, 10, and 12-inch sizes.

This #AnatomicalAtlas is worth an arm and a leg!

Featured today for #MicroscopyMonday is 'Notes on lectures on bacteriology by Frederick Fuller Russell' (1909-1910), a 122-page lecture notebook created by Glenn I. Jones as a student in the #ArmyMedicalSchool. Among the extensive notes are colorful illustrations of preparations, instruments, cultures, and microscopic features of a variety of disease-causing bacteria. A new web archive at NLM, September 11: Health Effects and Policy, preserves the ephemeral content of born-digital sites. Filmstrips are old school, but these are custom old school. The strips were beautifully etched and painted by hand, without use of a camera, and distributed in part to help teach the production techniques. The content is valuable, too, offering a glimpse at health concerns and education in a certain time and place, China in 1949-1950. There are 23 filmstrips in this collection, and NLM has nothing else like it.
