Ren Capucao, MSN, RN of the Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry in the School of Nursing at the University of Virginia will discuss "(Un)fit to Nurse: Efficiency and Discipline at the Philippine General Hospital, 1898–1916."

Dental hygienists have been doing spring cleaning on our teeth for over a hundred years! This week in April is set aside to honor these health workers who keep us all healthy and smiling brightly.

Around one quarter of U.S. adults suffers from hay fever, or seasonal allergic rhinitis. The latest Circulating Now post looks at a selection of items from the NLM Digital Collections which explores historical strategies to manage hay fever.

In 1878, the Library acquired about 300 scientific pamphlets that were previously owned by the renowned French physiologist Claude Bernard. In preparation for the "Making the Greatest Medical Library in America" exhibition, each pamphlet was carefully scanned and made freely available in the NLM Digital Collections. Digitizing such rare collection material is a highly collaborative process involving diverse staff expertise. This week, the Circulating Now blog welcomes guest authors Hartmut Schulz, PhD, and Gerhard Dirlich, PhD, to share their research on an anonymous sleep journal in the NLM collections. The one-year diary includes detailed records of sleep as well as diet, exercise, meteorological observations, and more.

Happy #InternationalWomensDay! This week, the Circulating Now blog highlights the career of biochemist Maxine Frank Singer. During a career spanning nearly six decades, Dr. Singer has made important contributions to the deciphering of the genetic code, understanding RNA and DNA, and devising safety guidelines for the recombinant DNA in the 1970s. She has also championed the cause of women and minorities in science and built innovative programs to improve science education.
