Filmstrips are old school, but these are custom old school. The strips were beautifully etched and painted by hand, without use of a camera, and distributed in part to help teach the production techniques. The content is valuable, too, offering a glimpse at health concerns and education in a certain time and place, China in 1949-1950. There are 23 filmstrips in this collection, and NLM has nothing else like it.
For #ChallengeWednesday here is Lantern Slide 80, also known as “Nightmare Turtle” from the St. Elizabeths Magic Lantern Slide Collection (1855-1890s). This #SlipSlide shows a sleeping man having a nightmare featuring a blue mare astride a giant turtle brandishing a sword and lobster (image 2). Visit the link in our bio to read more about this #CuriousCollection in Hidden Treasure (page 176-177).
“From Hand to Mouth is the story of food, flies, fingers and such—a brief account of the things you can and must do to prevent the spread of disease."
For today's #ArchivesHashtagParty, we’re heading back to the “Old Red Brick” building days of the Army Medical Library, one of the National Library of Medicine’s predecessor institutions. From our Prints and Photographs collection is a still image taken in 1948 of library staff using various kinds of #ArchivesOldSchool technology like mimeograph machines, manual typewriters, and index cards to complete their work.
Join us online next Thursday at 2pm EST for the next NLM History Talk! In “Peril in the Air: Pollution Activism on Film,” Sarah Eilers of NLM and Angela Saward of @wellcomecollection explore the intersection of filmmaking, government, and medicine working together to drive environmental awareness and policy.
