23 Rose at 4 ½ & by 5 had breakfast & am now awaiting our mules to be driven in the morning is clear but most delightful giving tokens of a warm autumn day – Day is just breaking & the mules are in the corral – having saddled my mule Delaney, Bishop & I started off & cantered away to Junction City which we reached at 7 the drowsy people were just opening their shops & stores & rubbing their eyes – We “smiled” & had a chat with the Editor of the paper & passing on crossed the Republican Fork at 8 o’clock & receiving a hearty welcome fr Clark we eat a very hearty second breakfast which Mrs C got up for us – nice steak coffee & pancakes – riding up to the Fork I spent ½ hour with Gordon & got plenty of Papers hearing how Penna had gone I gave up all politics & am now in for [money]
