coming up – The day has been most charming – Passed & met 3 or 4 hunting parties this afternoon – Came into camp on Spring Creek, 6 m West of Salina at 5 oclock having made 25 miles – feel now that we can sleep soundly & not be disturbed by Indian or Buff – as we are near the most western settlement – The night is beautiful & clear & Keen we have a fine fire in front of our tent around which the men are spinning yearns – To day we shot the first prairie chicken – have plenty of ducks – Van Vleet’s party sent us apples they tasted & smelled most deliciously & tasted of the Settlement.
